Let's face it, black streaks and moss on the roof is ugly. But it's not just aesthetics we're worried about, these organisms are damaging the roof. Gloeocapsa magma bacteria (the black streaks), moss, and lichen all damage the roof in different ways.

If you ever see someone pressure washing a roof, run the other way. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) explicitly recommends against high pressure cleaning as this causes granule loss. In other words much more harm than good. Proper roof cleaning involves treating the organic stains, gently brushing heavy moss infestations, low pressure rinsing, and allowing time to pass for weather to gently clear what remains.
